Three, Two, One, Liftoff!: Choir! Choir! Choir! Perform “Space Oddity” in NYC
Despite the incredible set-list, Choir! Choir! Choir! arguably stole the show, closing out the night (and saving the best for last) with a group rendition of “Space Oddity,” involving both the New York City Children’s Chorus as well as all the previous performers and audience members.
The group sing-along and shared musical experience managed to bring out some serious emotional payoff for an already powerful night. The Wall Street Journal called it the “emotional high point of the evening” and a “rare moment where everyone was a part of the show, contributing vocals.” And, as Rolling Stone reports: “It seemed like most in attendance knew the words by heart, and the sound of 3,000 people singing Bowie’s first hit like it was the National Anthem was hauntingly beautiful.”
We’ll leave the last word from the Choir!-penned diary of the evening in the Toronto Star.
“The choir starts us off with some oohs,” writes co-founder Nobu Adilman, “and when it’s time for the audience to join, they don’t hesitate for a second. The night’s featured performers then amble on the stage and the mega-epic Choir! Choir! Choir! sing-along tribute to David Bowie begins.
“It’s difficult to describe the power of the moment but both Daveed and I felt like we were floating, powered by all the voices.
“I turn around and see Daveed belting it out, and right behind him, there’s [Wayne] Coyne next to our choir doing the same. Bettye LaVette is downstage.
At the end of the song, everyone in the hall does those trademark hand-claps and the stage lights cut out …
Nothing could be finer …”
