When you work for someone else, you are often driven by profit—but someone else dictates whether you receive that profit. How hard you work and how well you work plays a role in how much money you make but ultimately, getting a raise or a promotion is decided upon by someone else.
It is important not to lose sight of the fact that we can be leaders and drive our own success. Dudley explains that in his own life, when he tied his aspirations solely to money and jobs, he was "wildly unhappy." While he had a good job and made a good income, he was constantly worrying about screwing up or making someone else upset. Because of that, he would hold back from doing certain things that ultimately would provide more value to his life. Not only that, but he was driven by the motivation to make money instead of making a positive impact on society—even though the latter would leave him more fulfilled in the long run. When you focus on achieving goals that are not solely profit-oriented, you can take charge of your own success.
In his talks, Dudley discusses everyday leadership and how we all have the potential to do great things that will empower ourselves and others. Leadership is often seen as something that is bigger than us, but Dudley says that anyone—no matter what barriers are put before them—is capable of making positive contributions to the world around them. He encourages audiences to reframe the way they look at their work life and focus on making valuable contributions every day, even if they aren't rewarded with monetary gain. Rather, you will receive a reward much more value than money—happiness and fulfillment.
