“Great Architecture Can Heal.” Welcome Acclaimed Architect Michael Murphy to the Lavin Roster.

The way we make buildings reveals a lot about us says Michael Murphy—the acclaimed, visionary architect behind the National Memorial for Peace and Justice in Montgomery, Alabama. In revealing talks he explains how architecture can kickstart transformative change, drawing from his work with MASS Design Group, a non-profit architecture firm that aims to research, build, and advocate for structures that promote justice and human dignity.

Great architecture can give us hope. Great architecture can heal,” says Murphy in his standing-ovation garnering TED talk below. He recounts the incredible story of building the Butaro District Hospital in Rwanda: by hiring locally, sourcing regionally, and using every design decision as an opportunity to invest in the dignity of the community, he created a nourishing space which facilitated faster healing.
