Lavin Speakers Steven Pinker and Benedetta Berti at TED2018: The Age of Amazement and Beyond

Every year in Vancouver, a selection of Lavin speakers take to the stage at the always sold-out TED conference. This year is no different, as psychologist Steven Pinker and international policy analyst Benedetta Berti bring their expertise to this year’s theme: The Age of Amazement.

Steven Pinker in Session 1: Doom. Gloom. Outrage. Uproar.

A TED Mainstage veteran, Steven Pinker returns to Vancouver with a new talk based on his bestselling book, Enlightenment Now. Drawing on the book’s fascinating research, Pinker urges us to step back from the gory headlines, which play to our psychological biases. Instead, follow the data. Pinker shows that life, health, prosperity, safety, peace, knowledge, and happiness are on the rise, not just in the West, but worldwide. This progress is a gift of the Enlightenment: the conviction that reason and science can enhance human flourishing. But in 2018, have we become complacent? Have we taken the Enlightenment’s breakthroughs and ideals for granted?

Benedetta Berti in TED Fellows Talks, Session 1

Another repeat TED Speaker, Dr. Benedetta Berti is a security expert who has worked with organizations across the globe. Her research goes beyond the 24-hour news-cycle hype to figure out how armed groups, including terrorists, actually function, revolutionizing the way we understand, negotiate with, and defeat violent organizations. Berti’s current projects include leading an effort to design new parameters for Israeli-Palestinian peace, and conducting a policy study on how to effectively deliver humanitarian aid to cut-off areas in Syria and Iraq.
