Ask a Webby Judge: AR Specialist Helen Papagiannis Talks Innovation, Trends, and the Internet Community
Dubbed the “The Internet’s Highest Honor” by the New York Times, The Webby Awards are the leading international award honoring excellence on the Internet. One of this year’s judges, Helen Papagiannis—a Lavin speaker and world-leading AR specialist—sat down for a spotlight interview.
“I’m excited about the ways we’re beginning to see AR appear in popular culture and our everyday. That’s how you know a technology has made it—when it becomes part of the larger visual and cultural vocabulary,” explains Helen Papagiannis. It’s part of the reason she founded her website XRGOESPOP last year. Though she saw a major shift happening in this space, there was no dedicated media outlet covering it. “XR GOES POP highlights trends businesses need to follow, and what it means for fashion, art, music, and much more.”
This is a stark contrast to early days of augmented reality, when it was a fledging field dominated by computer science. “I was very fortunate to be a member of an incredibly cutting-edge lab at York University where we focused on AR storytelling so early on,” Papagiannis says. “Today, innovators and creators of all backgrounds are liberating and propelling AR forward and it is absolutely thrilling to be part of The Webby Awards creative community during this pivotal time.”
