From the Kitchen to the Boardroom: Introducing New Speaker Vikram Vij

Vikram Vij is the owner of award-winning restaurants Vij’s Restaurant, Vij’s Rangoli, and My Shanti, and food truck Vij’s Railway Express. Vij’s Restaurant is world-renowned, described by New York Times food writer Mark Bittman as “easily among the finest Indian restaurants in the world.” But when Vij immigrated to Canada in 1989, he had no idea he would eventually become one of the country’s most recognizable faces. He recently left his post as a co-star of CBC's ever-popular Dragons' Den, to focus on growing his business even more.

In his talks, Vij takes us through his journey—from opening his first restaurant to starring on one of the most popular shows in Canada—and the obstacles, challenges, and successes he experienced along the way. How does he do things differently from other entrepreneurs? How has he expanded his business without compromising his vision? And how has he kept his family and his love for Indian cooking at the forefront of everything he does? It all comes down to passion, he says—for what you do, for where you came from, and for what you want to accomplish in this life.

Vij was honoured this month with a degree from Simon Fraser University. He and his wife and business partner Meeru Dhalwala were recognized as a Doctors of Law. Also this month, Vij's flagship Vancouver restaurant, Vij's, placed #14 on the list of Canada's 50 best restaurants; with another Vij eatery, My Shanti, landing 35th on the list.

As Vij says goodbye to Dragons' Den, we look forward to the upcoming season and the show's newest stars, Manjit Minhas (co-founder of one of the world's largest breweries) and Joe Mimran (the retail pioneer behind Joe Fresh and Club Monaco). Dragons' Den returns on Wednesday, October 7, 2015 at 8 p.m. (8:30 NT) on CBC Television.
