Why can't our leaders work together? In a world where global problems threaten to tear societies apart, Jonathan Haidt looks to repair our differences by finding the reason we disagree in the first place. In his bestselling The Righteous Mind, Haidt points to the moral intuition: our gut instinct that helps us determine what feels right and wrong.
Highlights "If social psychology was a sport, Haidt would be a Phil Mickelson or Rodger Federer – likable, fun to watch and one of the best. But what makes Haidt one-of-a-kind in academia is his sincere attempt to study and understand human morality from a point of view other than his own."

Book Speaker

Jonathan Haidt's work focuses on morality and emotion, and how they vary across cultures. Morality, by its very nature, is difficult to study. It binds people together into teams that seek victory, not truth. It closes hearts and minds to opponents even as it makes cooperation and decency possible within groups.

In addition to his work on morality, Haidt is also an expert on positive psychology (the scientific study of human flourishing) and studies positive emotions such as moral elevation, admiration, and awe. Haidt is a highly respected and coveted speaker who has appeared at TED. The Righteous Mind debuted at #6 on The New York Times' Hardcover Nonfiction Bestseller List. He is also the author of The Happiness Hypothesis and Flourishing. Haidt received his B.A. from Yale University, and went on to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.

  • The Righteous Mind: Why Good People are Divided by Politics and Religion

Since the "culture wars" began in the 1960's, American politics have been characterized by two sides bitterly and stubbornly locked in a stalemate—Liberals on the left, Republicans on the right. Why does it seem impossible to find bi-partisan solutions? Why do both sides seem more entrenched in their worldviews and policy decisions than ever before. For Jonathan Haidt, the only way to understand the modern political landscape is through the lens of morality. Haidt draws on his extensive research in human morality to reach new conclusions about the struggle between conservatives and liberals. The most important differences aren't about political issues—rather, it is each side's respective understanding of morality. With a timely, optimistic message, Haidt cuts through the rhetoric and presents a fascinating and engaging interpretation of modern politics at this crucial moment.

  • The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

What is happiness, and how can you achieve it? We have all asked this question at one time or another. But Jonathan Haidt may have finally answered it. In The Happiness Hypothesis, Haidt outlines what he calls "ten great ideas" —strategies, mantras, and concepts originating from several of the world's great civilizations that help us to understand happiness and how to attain it. Analyzing these ideas through scientific research, Haidt breaks down human morality and gives us a look inside our own minds. How can we find ways to overcome our natural self-righteousness? Why is it important to learn from moralities that differ from our own? Haidt answers these questions, and more, in this smart and uplifting talk.

Why can't our political leaders work together as threats loom and problems mount? Why do people so readily assume the worst about the motives of their fellow citizens? In The Righteous Mind, social psychologist Jonathan Haidt explores the origins of our divisions and points the way forward to mutual understanding. His starting point is moral intuition--the nearly instantaneous perceptions we all have about other people and the things they do. These intuitions feel like self-evident truths, making us righteously certain that those who see things differently are wrong. Haidt shows us how these intuitions differ across cultures, including the cultures of the political left and right. He blends his own research findings with those of anthropologists, historians, and other psychologists to draw a map of the moral domain, and he explains why conservatives can navigate that map more skillfully than can liberals. He then examines the origins of morality, overturning the view that evolution made us fundamentally selfish creatures.

But rather than arguing that we are innately altruistic, he makes a more subtle claim: that we are fundamentally groupish. It is our groupishness, he explains, that leads to our greatest joys, our religious divisions, and our political affiliations. In a stunning final chapter on ideology and civility, Haidt shows what each side is right about, and why we need the insights of liberals, conservatives, and libertarians to flourish as a nation.

  • Flourishing Flourishing

Psychology has made great strides in understanding mental illness, but how much has it learned about mental health? When people want to reflect upon the good life and how to live it, they turn to philosophers and novelists, not psychologists. The emerging field of positive psychology aims to redress this imbalance.

In Flourishing, distinguished scholars apply scientific analyses to study the good life, expanding the scope of social and psychological research to include happiness, well-being, courage, citizenship, play, and the satisfactions of healthy work and healthy relationships. Their findings reveal that a sense of meaning and a feeling of richness emerge in life as people immerse themselves in activities, relationships, and the pursuit of intrinsically satisfying goals like overcoming adversity or serving one's community through volunteering. This provocative book will further define this evolving field.

  • The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom The Happiness Hypothesis: Finding Modern Truth in Ancient Wisdom

Jonathan Haidt skillfully combines two genres-philosophical wisdom and scientific research-delighting the reader with surprising insights. He explains, for example, why we have such difficulty controlling ourselves and sticking to our plans; why no achievement brings lasting happiness, yet a few changes in your life can have profound effects, and why even confirmed atheists experience spiritual elevation. In a stunning final chapter, Haidt addresses the grand question "How can I live a meaningful life?," offering an original answer that draws on the rich inspiration of both philosophy and science.
