LZ Granderson is a senior writer for ESPN: The Magazine—but he’s no ordinary sports columnist. Granderson is perhaps the most visible openly gay sports journalist in the nation. A candid, entertaining, and heartfelt speaker, he offers a unique vantage point from the intersection where athletics, race, identity, LGBT issues, and culture meet.Granderson is currently a senior writer and columnist for ESPN The Magazine and ESPN.com, and has contributed to ESPN's Sports Center, Outside the Lines, and First Take. He writes a weekly column for CNN.com, appears weekly on CNN Newsroom, has a CNN video blog and podcast and appears frequently on CNN Newsroom, American Morning with Ali Velshi, Newsroom with Don Lemon and Anderson Cooper 360.
Granderson was first hired at The Atlanta Journal-Constitution as a home design writer, but with his passion for sports it wasn’t long before he became the lead writer for the paper’s entertainment section, where he made a name as a sportswriter. In 2003, ESPN The Magazine hired Granderson as a freelance writer, and in 2004 he became an NBA editor. He was named as the 2012 Journalist of the Year by the National Lesbian and Gay Journalists Association and is a 2011 and 2010 nominee and the 2009 winner of the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation award for online journalism.
