Joseph Kahn was raised in the suburbs of Houston, Texas. His parent had high hopes of enrolling him in the area's prestigious medical schools—but the young Kahn quickly fell under the spell of comic books, television and movies. He became a pop culture sponge. He began his directing career in his teens, shooting skateboarding videos while working at a grocery store. After a brief stint at NYU, Kahn made dozens of low budget videos acting as his own cinematographer, editor, and production designer. This marked the humble beginnings of one of the most influential careers in music video direction, and the arrival of one of the most exciting directors, working in any medium, in America.
