Jonathan Haidt is Social Psychologist and Professor at the University of Virginia. His work focuses on morality and emotion, and how they vary across cultures. Morality, by its very nature, makes it hard to study morality. It binds people together into teams that seek victory, not truth. It closes hearts and minds to opponents even as it makes cooperation and decency possible within groups. Haidt asks: if morality is such a contentious issue, how come societies have been able to agree on them? And, why does morality vary so drastically between cultures?

In addition to his work on morality, Haidt is also an expert on positive psychology (the scientific study of human flourishing) and studies positive emotions such as moral elevation, admiration, and awe. Haidt is a highly respected and sought after speaker and has spoken at the TED Conference. He is also the author of The Happiness Hypothesis and Flourishing. Haidt received his B.A. from Yale University, and went on to complete his M.A. and Ph.D. at the University of Pennsylvania.
