THE LATEST: Cristina Garica's new novel, The Lady Matador's Hotel, will be released September 7th 2010, and her first book of poetry, The Lesser Tragedy of Death, is in stores now.

Born in Havana, and raised in New York City, Cristina Garcia has quietly become one of the most important Latin American novelists of our time and a provocative voice on the future of multicultural America. Her books beautifully capture the interrelated personal, political and familial complexities of living with a hyphenated identity.

In her talks, she examines questions close to the hearts of millions of Americans: what does it mean for immigrants to achieve comfort and success within mainstream culture? What are the triumphs and the sometimes heartbreaking conflicts of their dual lives? What are the staggering demographic and political ramifications of their presence? How do young multi-hyphenated people see themselves? With a marvelous on-stage charm, Garcia draws on personal, artistic and cultural history to spark an important conversation on the multicultural experience, especially as it plays out across genders and generations.

Cristina Garcia's debut novel, Dreaming in Cuban, won universal acclaim, with The New York Times immediately pegging her as "a magical new writer." Her three novels since, The Aguero Sisters, Monkey Hunting and A Handbook to Luck, have exceeded that early promise. Formerly Time magazine's Florida and Caribbean Bureau Chief, based in Miami, Garcia is a Guggenheim Fellow, a National Book Award Finalist, and the editor of two critically acclaimed anthologies: Cubanisimo! and Bordering Fires.

Additional Lectures by Cristina Garcia

No Longer in the Margins: Latinos in America

The fastest growing immigrant group in America, Latinos are redefining mainstream life. Yet, their contributions, both cultural and economic, are still largely ignored; worse, many still lump all Latinos together, when in fact they are an incredibly diverse group. This talk sets the record straight. Garcia delivers a definitive understanding of modern day Latinos in America, showing us their enormous sway -- as consumers, as cultural agents, as voters -- and why they matter to the future of this country.

Revolutionary Cuba: Final Act or New Play?

With Fidel Castro no longer leading Cuba, will the country undergo a new revolution? Or, as the Cuban expression goes, is this simply the 'same dog with a different collar'? Garcia examines what these changes mean for Cubans and for the often-contentious relationship, both social and economic, between Cuba and the United States.
