Stephen Prothero: Why You Can't Be a Successful Politician in America If You Don't Embrace Religion

Here’s a new video of Lavin speaker Stephen Prothero discussing religion’s iron grip on American politics. Juxtaposing the Presidential campaigns of John Kerry (2004) and Barack Obama (2008), he shows us how religion has come to absolutely dominate political discourse, and why — given the low level of religious literacy among Americans—this is a dangerous thing. Newsweek calls Prothero (Religious Literacy, God is Not One) “a world religions scholar with the soul of a late-night comic.” You definitely see what they mean in the video, though his message — that religious literacy is a pressing civic concern — is quite serious.
