ERIC
ALTERMAN The media has become so pervasive in our
lives that regardless of exactly where on the ideological fence you sit, the question
of media bias has become all but unavoidable. Eric Alterman is one of the country's
leading experts on this topic. Termed "the most honest and incisive media critic writing
today" by the National Catholic Reporter, Eric Alterman, author
of the national bestseller, What Liberal Media? The Truth About Bias
and the News, is the media columnist for The Nation, the "Altercation"
weblogger for MSNBC.com (wwww.altercation.msnbc.com), and a senior fellow
at the Center for American Progress. His Sound & Fury: The Making of
the Punditocracy, won the 1992 George Orwell Award (and was revised
and re-released in 2000). Alterman has also written Who Speaks for
America?: Why Democracy Matters in Foreign Policy and It Ain't
No Sin to be Glad You're Alive: The Promise of Bruce Springsteen,
which won the 1999 Stephen Crane Literary Award. In February 2004, he
published, with Mark Green, The Book on Bush: How George W. (Mis)Leads
America and in September of that year released When Presidents
Lie: Deception and Its Consequences. A contributor to virtually every
significant national publication in the US and many in Europe, in recent
years, Alterman has also been a contributing editor to, or columnist for:
Worth, Rolling Stone, Elle, Mother Jones, World Policy Journal,
and The Sunday Express (London). A senior fellow of the World Policy
Institute at New School University, and Adjunct Professor of Journalism
at Columbia University, Alterman received his B.A. in History and Government
from Cornell, his M.A. in International Relations from Yale, and his Ph.D.
in US History from Stanford. What does Eric talk about? Can
You Trust The Media?
The "news" is supposed to be something we can trust - a source
of unbiased reporting of the events of the day. If it were only that simple.
In a provocative, insightful and educational presentation, Eric Alterman
argues that the American media has become so partisan and biased as to be
almost untrustworthy. The implications of this for American democracy make
for a lively and thought-provoking discussion.
The
Book on Bush: Why George W. Is Bad for America
As an unabashed "liberal", Eric Alterman makes no effort to hide
his feelings that the presidency of George W. Bush has been a disaster for America.
In this talk he chronicles what he sees as the president's long list of failures
and sins of both ommission and commission. You may not agree with his conclusions,
but Alterman's perspective is one that is sure to provoke both debate and discussion. Truth
in Politics - Is There Such A Thing? It
has become almost a truism of the modern age - politicians lie. Full Stop. But
is that really the case, or is there still truth in politics? In this talk Eric
Alterman explores this crucial question and offers some surprising answers. |
