Flags of Our Fathers in Theatres October 20th
Clint Eastwood Directs Film Adaptation of James Bradley's Bestseller
The long-awaited adaptation of James Bradley's bestsellling
book Flags of Our Fathers will arrive in theaters
nationwide on October 20th. A Clint Eastwood and Steven
Spielberg production, the movie was directed by Eastwood,
who has called it one of the biggest and most challenging
of his distinguished career.

Kevin Sites Wins Daniel Pearl Award For Courage
Another Recognition for "Solo" Journalist
Kevin Sites, of Yahoo!'s "Kevin Sites in the Hot Zone,"
has established a reputation as one of the world's most
accomplished and innovative young journalists. His willingness
to put himself in harm's way and tell the truth about what
he sees has made him a rising star. His integrity and courage
were recently recognized by the Daniel Pearl Foundation.
The organization was established to honor the legacy of
Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, who was
murdered by Islamic militants in Pakistan.

As one of the leaders of the Chicano
High School Walkout of 1968, Paula Crisostomo shaped a
defining moment in the then nascent drive for equal rights
for Latino-Americans. We asked Paula to share her thoughts
with us on the recent nationwide demonstrations in support
of Latino immigrants, in the context of her own experiences
of almost forty years ago.
"In March 1968, thousands of students walked out
of high schools in East Los Angeles and the greater Los
Angeles area. This was in protest against deplorable educational
programs and a 50% drop out rate. I helped to lead those
walkouts. This was the largest, organized demonstration
by high school students in this country. The walkouts
spread across the southwest.
The walkouts were initiated and led by Chicano college and high school students, with a lone teacher as our guiding force. We sought support for our cause from school administrators, politicians, parents and clergy before we walked out. With the exception of a very few, no support was given, until the walkouts were staged. Then, perhaps out of shame, community support came forth ... "
