New Study by Laurie Garrett Explores Links Between HIV/Aids

Renowned science writer and Council on Foreign Relations
Fellow Laurie Garrett has authored a new report that explores
the links between the HIV/Aids pandemic and national security
and urges western governments to take more action to tackle
the problem. Says Garrett, ""The real devastating
impact of the epidemic hasn't happened yet," noting
that between 38 and 42 million people worldwide are currently
infected with the virus. And, she says, some countries with
high infection rates "haven't even begun to imagine
the economic, social and military impacts, social stability
impacts of their epidemic".

Ridley Scott, has signed on to direct the film version
of Robert Kurson's bestselling book, Shadow Divers:
The True Adventure of Two Americans Who Risked Everything
to Solve One of the Last Mysteries of World War II.
Scott, who has directed such films as Blade Runner, Gladiator
and Black Hawk Down, apparently fell in love with the
script, written by William Broyles (Apollo 13, Cast Away).
The combination of Scott and Broyles is sure to mean that
Shadow Divers will be one of the major films of 2006.
