Rock’s Role in The Sustainability of Our Planet
Rocker Jonny Dubowsky brings his music, star power and environmental activism to Lavin Agency
According to music critics, Jonny Dubowsky, the lead singer of Jonny Lives, may be rock’s next big thing. But for Dubowsky, rock’s next big thing is a concerted effort to use the medium—and all of popular culture—to reach out to youth, and educate them about global warming and environmental sustainability. His non-profit organization, Rock ‘n’ Renew, has received overwhelming response and support from activists, students, and the press. Based on the idea that small personal actions can have a large social impact, his energetic presentations show students how they can take action on renewable energy, alternative fuels and climate change.

Actor Kal Penn to Teach at UPenn
Star of The Namesake and Harold and Kumar Go to Whitecastle now instructor at University of Pennsylvania
Last month, The New York Times called Kal Penn’s turn in The Namesake a "crackling star performance," writing that he "brings an offhanded charisma to the role." That charm will be on full display in the spring of 2008 when he teaches two undergraduate courses as a guest instructor at the University of Pennsylvania. Penn is already a nationwide campus favorite, for his role in the cult comedy Harold and Kumar, and for his funny but probing on-campus presentations. On stage, he gets audiences to look at the cultural and racial stereotypes that plague popular culture, and what can be done to challenge them.

Educating Youth in the Age of Globalization and Immigration
Marcelo Suarez-Orozco examines how education systems are adapting to—and benefiting from—globalization and mass immigration
Esteemed NYU professor Marcelo Suarez-Orozco has released two new books—Learning in a New Land: Immigrant Students in American Society and Learning in the Global Era—that examine the most pressing issues facing the future of education. In America, one child in five is the child of immigrants. But why do some of these children become socially and academically successful, while others become marked by frustration and disenchantment? Suarez-Orozco answers this confounding question—and many more—in his new talks, perfect for educators, policy-makers and anyone else with a stake in education.
