Karen Armstrong's Charter for Compassion

The Battle for God author to build a universal framework for understanding religion

"We need to create a new narrative, get out of the rat-run of hatred, chauvinism and defensiveness; and make the authentic voice of religion a power in the world that is conducive to peace." In accepting her 2008 TED Prize, Karen Armstrong reached out to the thousands of leaders representing Judaism, Christianity and Islam. With a short list of twelve religious leaders, and help from the UN, she hopes to create the Charter for Compassion, a two-page document based on the fundamental principles of universal justice and respect.

Why I Support Obama: A Classic Viral Moment, Take Two

Derrick Ashong's new YouTube video is a  "seven minute soliloquy on democracy" (The New York Times)

Over a million people have now watched an interview with Derrick Ashong, talking about Barack Obama, on YouTube. Nearly as many have watched his emotional response video. The bracingly articulate clips have shown Americans that young people do care about their role in this election--that they're well informed and fast-mobilizing. "At a time when politics and popular culture are still in an awkward mating ritual," The New York Times writes, "Mr. Ashong…tapped into the youthquake that is shaking up the campaign."

LIVE FROM NEW YORK

A Night Out with Chuck Klosterman (and 350 of His Closest Friends)

The author of Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs brings the swagger—and the crowds—of a rock concert to the world of book readings

At his reading in New York this month, Chuck Klosterman played records from his collection; read hilarious excerpts from his highly-anticipated new novel, Downtown Owl; ruminated, as only he can, on the state of pop and media culture; and engaged in a Q&A that played out like the most fascinating debate club meeting ever held. Here is how he described the event: "After I read and talk I will take questions from the audience about whatever they want to ask about. Brawling is allowed. At some point in the evening, I will kill a pregnant moose onstage with nunchucks."
