Happy Holidays From The Lavin Agency - Instead of Cards, We Sent a Cow!

Please accept our warmest wishes for a peaceful and relaxing holiday season, and a joyous 2006. In lieu of holiday cards, we have made a donation on behalf of our clients to World Vision which will purchase one milking cow for a family in a developing country. Capable of producing 200,000 glasses of milk in its lifetime, a cow is a gold mine of health for a poor family.

Novelist/Physicist Alan Lightman Bridges the Art-Science Gap
Organizers Say He'll Be Tough to Top Next Year

At a recent campus lecture Alan Lightman once again showed why he is one of the few speakers in the country capable of bridging the Art vs Science gap, and initiating an informed discussion about the relationship between the two realms. The event organizer said,

"
Using 2005-World Year of Physics as a backdrop for the sciences, creative writing as a common thread for the humanities, and the liberal arts philosophy as the glue to hold us all together, we brought Alan Lightman to campus as the featured speaker for our week-long Autumn at Adams celebration. Among other events, in the evening he delivered his lecture At the Crossroads of Science and the Arts and judging by the comments of long-time faculty in attendance, the activities associated with his visit formed the single most stimulating and invigorating collection of academic events on our campus in more than ten years. Alan Lightman’s unique perspective was a gift. Immediately following his visit, we were filled with excitement, trepidation, and anticipation. Excitement thanks to the event’s rousing success, anticipation for next year’s event, and trepidation for the difficulty we will have in finding another single individual that so completely embodies the spirit of our campus. In short, he was inspiring."

Physicist and Author Lisa Randall Featured in Seed Magazine

Lisa Randall

The current edition of popular science magazine Seed has a feature on physicist and author Lisa Randall. The article highlights Lisa's remarkable ability to make challenging ideas in theoretical physics accessible to a wide audience, and her rise to prominence in her field. The feedback we've been getting from audiences does confirm her ability to engage listeners in the wonder of science. Said one event organizer,

"Thank you again for presenting such an intriguing presentation of your work here at the museum last week. We are honored to have hosted you during this important moment in your career. The audience was rapt and very excited to hear you tell your story in person. You are clearly a teaching master - illuminating your theories and investigations through an understandable succession of ideas and simple but effective metaphors. I think everyone I encountered over the past week was delighted to be able to understand the concepts behind Warped Passages when I reiterated your language and metaphors - of course in a much more rudimentary interpretation."
