Markos Moulitsas, founder of Daily Kos

Yearly Kos and the Rise of People-Powered Politics

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama and influential bloggers join Markos Moulitsas at a newly prominent political event

In Chicago this month, The Yearly Kos Convention announced its place on the political landscape. The New York TImes said it "carried the feel of a mini political convention." Featuring a much-discussed debate with Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama, the event showed how far the Netroots Nation has come in bringing the voice of the people to those in power. Daily Kos founder Markos Moulitsas is widely credited with starting the Netroots revolution, and he remains its most prominent figure. In his impassioned speech from Yearly Kos—rebroadcast on evening newscasts and The Colbert Report—he talked about using the democratizing potential of the Internet to re-energize political advocacy and widen political discourse.

Randall Kennedy, author of Sellout

Black America and "The Sellout"

Randall Kennedy deconstructs a volatile term and examines the politics of racial betrayal

Four years after the success of Nigger, his critically acclaimed and bestselling book, Randall Kennedy returns with Sellout. The term "sellout" is often applied by Blacks to other Blacks who "act White," or who are deemed to lack racial pride, and it continues to plague many in the African-American community. In his extraordinary new talk, Kennedy shows us the consequences of living with race anxiety and offers some provocative solutions to overcome the feelings of fear, anger and mistrust that often surround talk of so-called race traitors.

Sellout will be released in January 2008, and Kennedy will be available for Black History Month Events in February.

Gina Kolata, author of Rethinking ThinKolata Chews the Fat with Colbert

New York Times writer discusses America’s weight problems with Stephen Colbert

In her critically acclaimed new book, Rethinking Thin, Gina Kolata reveals that our society's obsession with losing weight is less about keeping trim than about money, power, politics, trends, and impossible ideals. According to Publishers Weekly, the book "will change your thinking about weight, whether you struggle with it or not." On The Colbert Report recently, the "truthiness"-obssessed host asked Kolata some pertinent questions about these issues—but only after serenading her with an impromptu version of "the Pina Colata Song." And that’s the word.

Managing Your Time—and Your Life—On Campus

Steve Prentice shows college students how to make the most of their time and take back control of their lives

For many students, the most difficult part of life is not the time spent in the classroom, but rather the time spent outside of it: studying, commuting, engaging in social activities. In his upbeat talks, Steve Prentice brings a pragmatic approach to dealing with this important but often neglected matter.
