Stephen Prothero Debuts on New York Times Bestseller
List
Religious Literacy Makes a Big Splash
This month, Stephen Prothero appeared
on Oprah, was featured in a TIME magazine
cover story ("The Case for Teaching the Bible"), and saw
his book, Religious Literacy, hit the New York
Times bestseller list. At the center of all this media
attention, Prothero is calling for public schools to teach
academic courses on the bible and on world religions, in
order to highlight the major and often misunderstood role
that they play in global affairs. "It's not about trying
to turn people into Christians," Prothero says. "It's about
trying to get them to understand what's going on in the
world and understand what's going on in American politics."

schools in America. This year, the United States will celebrate
this seminal moment with a number of public events. And
Minnijean Brown Trickey will embark on a special speaking
tour, giving students a hopeful and fascinating exploration
of social change, diversity, and the battle for freedom
and equality in America that still rages today.
