A visionary Latina artist and community activist, Elisha Miranda works on progressive projects across many genres, including film, television and literature. Her work is a socially focused but non-didactic effort to create an entertaining framework through which young people can create dialog, pursue social justice, and promote leadership.

In her talks, Miranda encourages the entrepreneurial side of young people, especially women of color, pointing them to business and networking strategies that will get their art made and their voices heard. With great compassion, she touches on cultural work, social entrepreneurship and youth organizing, and shows us the importance of media literacy, the role that words and images play in social justice, and how to be both an activist and an artist. With a background in teaching, diversity training, and leadership development, she examines the stories of people who are crossing borders of race, sexuality, and gender.

An adjunct professor in film at the City University of New York, Miranda works extensively with emerging filmmakers and other young artists. By exploring how pop culture and activism can inform and aid each other, she makes accessible enormous future opportunities for young people. She is currently developing Sangria Street, a Nickelodeon show for young adults that will be the first English language program in America to prominently feature Latinas in front of and behind the camera. She is a founder of Chica Luna Productions and a creative partner at Sister Outsider Entertainment. In the film world, her movie Outside The Wall won a Tribeca All-Access Fellowship. In the world of fiction, her novel, The SistaHood: On The Mic, was selected by the Association of American Publishers in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month.

As a product of a youth program, Miranda is a testament to the importance of youth leadership and development. After years of working on issues ranging from multicultural education to HIV/AIDS, she began a career in entertainment with the intention of using popular media to promote social justice.
