DAVID
BRANCACCIO Millions of people across America tune in each week
to watch David Brancaccio bring clarity to the most complex social, political,
and business issues of our time. As anchor and reporter at NOW on PBS,
the Emmy-winning investigative news and interview program, Brancaccio
brings an intelligence and a down-to-earth style that prompts viewers
to engage community and global challenges and to work for change.
David Brancaccio's investigative work often probes
the highest reaches of power and has taken him from chemical plants in
Louisiana to the endangered wilderness of the Rocky Mountain Front to
the cell blocks of Guantanamo Prison. His work regularly explores threats
to the environment, the news media, human rights, and America's dysfunctional
electoral system, while examining models for positive change. He has also
drawn on his long experience covering business and economic issues with
in-depth stories about America's vanishing pensions, innovations in health
care reform, and accountability and transparency in our public institutions
and private companies. Brancaccio's long-form interviews with leading
figures such as author Kurt Vonnegut, billionaire George Soros, and former
President Jimmy Carter are noted for their depth, civility and humor.
Prior to NOW, David Brancaccio spent ten years focusing on the human side of business, markets, and economics as the host of Marketplace, one of the most popular and influential programs on public radio. During his tenure, Marketplace won the two most prestigious awards in broadcast journalism, the Peabody and the DuPont-Columbia. In the early 1990s, Brancaccio served as the London-based European editor of Marketplace, documenting that continent's economic integration. He also covered diplomatic stories for the radio service of the Christian Science Monitor. Brancaccio's recent documentaries for public radio explored the future of the United Nations and global perceptions of national security. He was a frequent guest on CNN and CNBC, anchored the pioneering public affairs program, California Connected, and contributed to a variety of publications, from The Wall Street Journal to The Baltimore Sun. A broadcaster for more than three decades, Brancaccio got his start as a teenager on a small radio station in his home town of Waterville, Maine. He also attended schools in Italy, Madagascar, and Ghana, and holds a BA in History and African Studies from Wesleyan University and an MA in Journalism from Stanford University. A skilled moderator, Brancaccio brings focus, clarity, and humor to a wide range of topics from the arts to business, technology to community development. His book, Squandering Aimlessly, published by Simon & Schuster, is an account of his pilgrimage across America to explore how people apply their values to their money. American Journalism Review called the work, "A stellar model for consumer reporting…Brancaccio's approach and attitude are irreverently nontraditional." The Cleveland Plain Dealer highlighted Brancaccio's "wit, candor, and storytelling skill." What does David Brancaccio talk about?
