CARL
HIAASEN
Carl Hiaasen is simply a fascinating person. Perhaps best known as the author of eleven novels, including the best-selling Sick Puppy and Skinny Dip, Carl also writes a popular weekly column for The Miami Herald, where he has established himself as one of the country's outstanding investigative journalists.

A three-time Pulitzer Prize nominee, Carl Hiaasen has written over 1300 pieces for The Miami Herald exposing land corruption scams, drug smuggling rings, dangerous doctors, and corrupt politicians. And since real life in South Florida is often stranger than fiction, none of these subjects are spared in his novels. Carl's fiction uses intelligence and humor to skewer the greedy and the corrupt, combining mystery plotlines, wicked satire, sharp observations, and a bizarre cast of characters.

With his insight and his killer instinct for stories, Carl has certainly earned the respect of his contemporaries. Dave Barry, his colleague at The Herald, calls him "one of South Florida's most vital natural resources, a relentlessly sane voice in a howling hurricane of hypocrisy, hokum and hype''. The New York Times compares him to Preston Sturges, Woody Allen, and S.J. Perelman, and The London Observer calls him "America's finest satirical novelist."

Carl has also found the time to write two novels for young readers, Flush and Hoot, which was awarded a Newbery Honor. Some of Carl's previous books have made their way to the big screen, and his novel, Skinny Dip, was just optioned by Mike Nichols (The Graduate, Primary Colors). Nature Girl, Carl's latest novel, introduces another of his classic characters: Honey Santana, an impassioned, poorly medicated bipolar, self-proclaimed queen of lost causes. She is sure to join the pantheon of great characters that Carl has written about and created. Carl's latest book, 2008's The Downhill Lie, is a personal look, humorous look at our baffling love of golf. .

What does Carl Hiaasen talk about?
Live and In Person

Carl Hiaasen's knowledge of the quirkiness and sleaze that underlie life in Florida make for hilarious and unbelievable stories. On a more serious level, his insights into human nature and the state of America in the 21st century are unique and perceptive. Tying it all together through a constant interplay of fact and fiction, Carl gives his audience unique insight into the creative process. He will show you an America you've never seen before. And, in spite of his scathingly funny critiques of the seedy side of business and politics in America, his belief in the good of people ultimately shines through. Carl's presentations inspire his audiences to appreciate beauty, critique seediness and corruption, and laugh at the absurdity of all of it.
