ROBERT
FULFORD Robert Fulford is, arguably, the most influential
cultural critic in Canada. As a columnist in the National Post and in
his many books and lectures, he synthesizes contemporary trends, issues,
and ideas to help Canadians understand themselves and their country a
little bit better.
In 1950, when he was eighteen, Robert Fulford started
his career in journalism as a sports writer at The Globe and Mail. Since
then he has been a news reporter; a magazine editor; a critic of books,
art, and movies; and a radio and television host for the CBC and for TVOntario.
These days in The National Post, Mr. Fulford writes a column on arts and
ideas each Tuesday and frequent special features on other days.Over 19
years, from 1968 to 1987, he was editor of Saturday Night magazine. He
has received 13 National Magazine Awards, has been granted honorary degrees
by five universities, and in 1984 was made an Officer of the Order of
Canada. In 1996, he was given the first lifetime achievement award of
the Canadian Journalism Foundation. He wrote about his experiences in
a book of memoirs, Best Seat in the House, and has also written
books on film and architecture. The Triumph of Narrative, the print
version of his Massey Lectures on CBC radio, was published in 1999 in
English Canada. This year it appeared in the United States and also in
Montreal, in its French version, L'instinct du récit. He
also writes a monthly column on media for Toronto Life magazine. He is
an associate fellow of Massey College in the University of Toronto. During
the year 2001, he spent a major part of his time serving as a judge of
the prestigious Giller Prize in Canadian fiction.
