MICHAEL
SMYTH From the time Michael Smyth was a little kid watching
his dad read the paper every morning over breakfast, he knew he wanted
to be a newspaperman. Since Michael's appointment with The Vancouver
Province, he has charmed, delighted, outraged and generally provided
a fresh perspective to people throughout British Columbia on happenings
in Victoria and the implications for the rest of the province.
For the past 10 years, Smyth has been located in British
Columbia, when he relocated here as Canadian Press' correspondent at the
Victoria Legislature, reporting on political happenings in B.C. In 1996,
his talents caught the eye of The Vancouver Province and he was
hired as their political columnist, bringing a fresh eye to the wonders
of B.C. politics. A regular on radio on both CKNW and the CBC, his wit
is just as sharp and acerbic in person as is his writing, and his penchant
for no-holds barred reporting on the relevant issues of the day has earned
him numerous accolades throughout the years. He is also a regular panelist
on The Angle, a weekly roundtable on B.C. politics that airs every
Sunday morning on BCTV Global News.
Michael is also the host of an evening talk show on CKNW radio, Nightline B.C., a hard news and current affairs show that focuses on politics and features nightly guests and open-line phone calls from listeners. It airs weekday evenings and is is syndicated on several other radio stations in B.C. What does Michael Smyth talk about?
Federal Follies: How British Columbia is Faring
Under the Stephen Harper Government
British Columbia has been called "the spoilt child
of confederation"-always complaining about the raw deal they get
from Ottawa. But now that a Westerner has moved into 24 Sussex Drive,
will B.C.'s priorities move to the top of Stephen Harper's to-do list?
Or will the "spoilt child" be left crying again? Join Michael
Smyth for his unique insight and analysis on Canada's unpredictable federal
political scene, especially as it applies to British Columbia. Will the
Harper government help cover cost overruns on the 2010 Olympic Games?
What about our pleas for transportation dollars to solve our nightmarish
traffic congestion? And will the federal Liberals, under new leadership,
turn Harper into a one-hit wonder?
As one of B.C.'s funniest political satirists, you'll also love Michael's take on our more notorious federal politicians-from the saga of Svend Robinson to the uproar over David Emerson. Who says Ottawa is 3,500 kilometres away? Michael Smyth brings federal politics home and makes it fresh and relevant for your audience. British Columbia's Political Circus: Welcome
to Your Ringside Seat
Nobody does politics quite like British Columbia. And
nobody slices, dices and analyzes B.C. politics quite like Michael Smyth.
As B.C.'s most funny and fearless political commentator, Michael will
delight your audience as he cuts through the spin and soundbites out of
Victoria to deliver a fresh, provocative and hilarious take on B.C.'s
political circus. So pull up a chair! You've got a ringside seat. Gordon
Campbell made history in 2005 when he became the first B.C. premier in
22 years to be re-elected. With the economy humming and the Olympics on
the way, these are best of times for the B.C. Liberals. Michael analyzes
their big lead in the opinion polls and explains how Campbell re-invented
his image. Are we witnessing a dynasty in the making? Or can Carole James
and the NDP build on their surprisingly strong election showing and close
the gap? If history has taught us anything, it's that British Columbia
politics are unpredictable. Anything can happenand usually does.
