MCDONALD In Toronto, Lanny is still remembered for his heroic
overtime goal to eliminate the New York Islanders in the 1978 quarter
finals. In what attests to his character and grit, McDonald scored the
goal nursing a broken bone in his wrist and a broken nose.
Lanny McDonald was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first
round, fourth over all, in the 1973 Amateur Draft, after two outstanding
years with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. His skill level and intensity
allowed him to make the jump to the NHL in his first year.After six
and half years with the Leafs, Lanny was dealt to the Colorado Rockies
(now the New Jersey Devils) midway through the 1979-80 season. He was
named team captain, a post he would maintain until his trade to the
Calgary Flames in November 1981. During McDonald's career, he scored
500 goals, 506 assists in 1,111games. Lanny's commitment to the game
on and off the ice is well documented. He was the recipient of the Bill
Masterton trophy in 1983 and named the NHL Man of the Year in 1989.
He participated in four NHL All Star games and in 1988 was the first
ever recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for dedication and
service to hockey. Lanny retired after the 1989 season after the Flames
