LANNY
MCDONALD
In Toronto, Lanny is still remembered for his heroic overtime goal to eliminate the New York Islanders in the 1978 quarter finals. In what attests to his character and grit, McDonald scored the goal nursing a broken bone in his wrist and a broken nose.

Lanny McDonald was selected by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the first round, fourth over all, in the 1973 Amateur Draft, after two outstanding years with the Medicine Hat Tigers of the WHL. His skill level and intensity allowed him to make the jump to the NHL in his first year. After six and half years with the Leafs, Lanny was dealt to the Colorado Rockies (now the New Jersey Devils) midway through the 1979-80 season. He was named team captain, a post he would maintain until his trade to the Calgary Flames in November 1981. During McDonald's career, he scored 500 goals, 506 assists in 1,111games. Lanny's commitment to the game on and off the ice is well documented. He was the recipient of the Bill Masterton trophy in 1983 and named the NHL Man of the Year in 1989. He participated in four NHL All Star games and in 1988 was the first ever recipient of the King Clancy Memorial Trophy for dedication and service to hockey. Lanny retired after the 1989 season after the Flames had won the Stanley Cup

McDonald's number '9' became the first number to be retired by the Calgary Flames organization, in his recognition of his contribution and dedication to the game and of hockey, and commitment to his community.
