CARLSON Curt Carlson is one of America's most accomplished
innovators. He is the president and CEO of SRI International, an influential,
non-profit organization that draws on a range of disciplines to innovate,
and then commercialize, new technologies for governments, corporations,
and the public sector. SRI have thus far invented the computer mouse,
HDTV, and numerous other revolutionary devices and services.
Bringing together a deep and varied base of expertise,
Carlson and his employees specialize in everything from information and
engineering technologies to pharmaceuticals, biotechnology, chemistry
and physics, and education, health, and economic development.
Carlson is a charter member of the Highlands Group, which makes recommendations to senior government officials about technologies of importance to the United States. Under the sponsorship of the entire U.S. intelligence communityincluding the Department of DefenseCarlson was a founding member of the National Information Display Laboratory (NIDL), a new model for government-industry technology development and commercialization. The program grew to become the National Technology Alliance, hosted at Sarnoff and SRI International. He has also served on many government task forces, including the Air Force Scientific Advisory Board, the US Army Research Laboratory Technical Assessment Board, and the Defense Science Board task force on biochemical defense. With more than 12 US patents in the fields of image quality, image coding and computer vision, Carlson helped lead the high definition television (HDTV) revolution, even winning an Emmy in 1997 for outstanding technical achievement. In 2000, he was awarded a second Emmy for a system that measures broadcast image quality. Carlson currently serves on the Science Advisory Committee for General Motors. Carlson's book, Innovation: The Five Disciplines for Creating What Customers Want, was released in 2006 to great acclaim; BusinessWeek named it one of the Best Business Books of the Year.
