The Internet as Art: Virginia Heffernan’s Magic and Loss Now Available

It’s launch day! Virginia Heffernan’s much-anticipated Magic and Loss is now available. Called “a thoroughly engrossing examination of the Internet’s past, present, and future” (Kirkus) and “a brilliant book” by Mark Edmundson, Magic and Loss examines and celebrates the Internet as a “massive and collaborative work of realist art”—a creation that both spellbinds and erases, connects and separates, like nothing we’ve ever seen.

Heffernan’s Magic and Loss is an ode to the Internet, embracing its creative, transformative qualities while accepting its eclipse of potentially more satisfying analog practices. A New York Times review of the book calls her “a gleeful trickster, a semiotics fan with an unabashed sweet tooth for pop culture,” and Smithsonian Magazine calls the book “a revealing look at how the internet continues to shape our lives emotionally, visually, and culturally.” Magic and Loss is also the subject of an in-depth Slate Book Review. Heffernan has been featured in a pair of interviews—one for NPR and one for CNBC—and in Medium, she tells readers how they can repair their relationship with the Internet, one step at a time.

For more Magic and Loss, check out our first look on the new release, or book her for a “Magic and Loss” keynote—an accessible and stimulating talk explaining the logic and aesthetics of the web.
