The 12th Floor: Meet Sumin from the Toronto Office

In The 12th Floor series, Lavin’s Spencer Gordon interviews the many fantastic individuals who make up the team here at our head office in Toronto, Canada. The Lavin Agency relies on its creative, intelligent, and passionate staff to represent its roster of world-changing speakers. Here you’ll get a chance to meet the professionals who work behind the scenes to guarantee that you find the perfect guest for your unique event, and that it goes smoothly—from initial inquiry to standing ovation.

Our seventh post in the series features Sumin George. A short note: Since filming our short video trailer, Sumin transitioned from Apprentice Agent to full-fledged Agent. So, hello, and congratulations, Sumin!

What’s your role here at the Agency? And how do you describe your job to others?

I’m an agent, building relationships with new and existing clients across Canada. My job is to understand exactly what you are looking to achieve with an upcoming event and work to match your desired message with the perfect speaker.

What’s your favourite part about the job?

I’m very much a people person so I love being a liaison and connecting with people from all over. I also enjoy working from the downtown core and collaborating with my exceptionally talented colleagues.

What is the most challenging part about your job?

As with any job, it’s always hard starting a new position because there’s so much to learn: new policies, practices, programs ... you get the picture (and yes, the alliterative enumeration is intentional.) But as time goes on, things are coming more naturally and it’s great to see a return on our efforts as a team.

Tell us a little bit about yourself. How did you come to work here? What were you doing before?

I was reading an article one day and scrolled down to the author’s bio where I read that she was a “lecture agent.” Intrigued, I began scouring the internet to understand what exactly that entailed which led me to the Lavin website and the job posting! I began my career as an English and French teacher in Canada and Mexico. I then worked at a video production company in Toronto’s film district before doing sales and marketing for a publishing house based out of Montreal.

What is the best (or what were some of the best) keynotes you’ve seen?

I found Eddie Huang’s keynote extremely moving; the “children of immigrants” experience definitely speaks to me on a personal level. His straight-up, no-holds-barred style effortlessly draws you into his story, and his lack of pretension is really refreshing.

What are some of your favourite books authored by Lavin speakers?

I recently finished Magic and Loss by Virginia Heffernan which is a beautiful read. She walks us through the various elements that make up the wide world of the web with a reverence for the magic that they each offer but with a simultaneous nostalgia for times past. I always appreciate a balanced view when examining a topic and she explores this juxtaposition with eloquence and perspicacity.

Do any of our speakers speak on topics close to your interests, passions, commitments, and so forth in particular?

Gavin Crawford is one of my favourite Canadian comics. I used to caption The Gavin Crawford Show and really got to understand the nuances that comprise his humour. I’ve been doing improv since high school and love comedy in general, so his over-the-top antics just kill me!
