Ta-Nehisi Coates, Refusing to Ignore "the Same Old Racism," Named to Politico 50

Lavin speaker Ta-Nehisi Coates has been named to the Politico 50: a list of today's "thinkers, doers and dreamers who really matter." In recognizing Coates for his groundbreaking Atlantic cover story, "The Case for Reparations," Politico writes: "Amid the happy talk of what is clearly an unrealized 'post-racial society', the Baltimore-born, Harlem-based Coates stands as a powerful example of how a single author can refuse to let an issue disappear—no matter how much Americans might ignore what he calls the 'dying embers of the same old racism' that has existed throughout the country’s history."

In "The Case for Reparations," Coates describes the generations of racist treatment toward black people in America and how that treatment is still resonating today. The article broke single-day traffic records on the Atlantic's website, and hundreds of readers "lined up down the block" (Washington Post) to hear him speak. The Post describes him as "an ascendant public intellectual with a voice that stands out in the white noise of a wired and word-flooded era" and the accolades continue to flood in for Coates: The Root recently placed him at the top of its list of the 100 most influential black leaders, innovators, and culture shapers.

Embedded above is the video of Coates discussing his Atlantic article on The Colbert Report. “This is well argued, and I can understand it, and I don’t want to understand it,” Stephen Colbert jokes. But not even the comedian can stay in character for the whole interview: Colbert's admiration for Coates and his work shines through.

Coates is also the author of acclaimed memoir The Beautiful Struggle. To book Ta-Nehisi Coates as a speaker for your next event, contact The Lavin Agency.
