TED 2012 | February 22, 2012 A Short History: The Lavin Agency and TED![]()
At the sold-out TED 2012 conference, Lavin Agency president David Lavin will host a special session for TED Fellows and interested TED speakers on how the speaking industry works—drawn from his 25 years of experience. “I’ve prepared a few stories,” says Lavin, a bracingly honest and quotable speaker in his own right. “But mostly, I’ll be there to answer all questions. There are always a lot of questions.”
Elsewhere at TED 2012, four Lavin speakers will take the stage. Susan Cain will speak on “the power of introverts in a world that cant’ stop talking;” her book, Quiet, recently debuted at #4 on the New York Times bestseller list. Jonathan Haidt, author of the upcoming book The Righteous Mind, will address politics through the prism of moral psychology: what makes liberals different from conservatives—and how can we bridge their differences? Rafe Esquith, called “America’s most influential classroom teacher” by The Washington Post, will also speak. As will Steven Pinker, whose latest book, The Better Angels of Our Nature, was a New York Times Notable Book for 2011. David Lavin has been attending TED for years now, and The Lavin Agency is the exclusive speakers bureau to many TED Fellows, including filmmaker and eco-activist Shalini Kantayya, architect and designer Mitchell Joachim, and Candy Chang, a public space artist whose latest project, Before I Die…, has made waves in the international press. Two Lavin speakers have also received the prestigious TED Prize: religious scholar Karen Armstrong and biologist E.O. Wilson, who used their “wish” money to create, respectively, The Charter for Compassion and The Encyclopedia of Life. The Lavin speakers who have spoken at TED throughout the years include novelists Chris Abani and Isabel Allende, scientists Jared Diamond and Janna Levin, social entrepreneurs Bill Strickland and Jessica Jackley, and a host of others. Most recently, TED.com featured a TEDx Toronto talk by Drew Dudley, “Everyday Leadership,” which has already garnered an astonishing 230,000 views in a matter of days. SUSAN CAIN at TED 2012 ![]()
"When it comes to creativity and to leadership,"
Susan Cain
said at TED 2012, "we need introverts doing what they do best." Her talk received a standing ovation.
Cain's instant bestseller, Quiet, is a manifesto for the one-third to one-half of the population who are introverts—and
who have been told, all their life, that their natural personality is flawed, that behaving like an extrovert is the only
path to success. Most of our institutions, from schools to workplaces, are heavily biased toward extroverts. A self-identified
introvert, Cain is working to change this and to radically transform the way we develop leaders, manage teams, make smart hires, and stimulate innovation.
