Novelist and Now Screenwriter: Salman Rushdie to Write Next People for Showtime

According to Variety, Booker Prize-winning author Salman Rushdie is developing an ambitious hourlong drama called Next People to air on Showtime, home of Dexter, Weeds, and Nurse Jackie. Charting the rapid change in contemporary American life, the show will incorporate politics, sex, religion, technology and science. Rushdie is writing the first script of the series, which he’s executive producing with the UK-based company Working Title TV.

Though Salman Rushdie is best known as the novelist behind classic books such as The Satanic Verses and Midnight’s Children, his voracious talent has led him, over the years, into other arenas: he has written a non-fiction book on The Wizard of Oz, appeared in movies such as Bridget Jones’ Diary, acted as President of PEN America, and even co-written a song with U2’s Bono. And, of course, he’s an impeccable and sought-after keynote speaker, talking about storytelling, politics, and pop culture in graceful and wide-ranging lectures to university and other audiences.
