Salman Rushdie: Liberate Iran by Air-Dropping Nintendos and Big Macs.

In a Big Think interview about continuing tensions in the Middle East, Salman Rushdie reminded us that the problem lies mostly within Islam — and not between Islam and the West. Rushdie spoke about a new generation of overwhelmingly young, liberal, and modern individuals — exemplified by Iran’s green movement but present throughout the whole region — who no longer want to live under the rules of the old regime. “I think if we want to look at the Muslim world you have to look at it in those ways,” said Rushdie. “You have to look at it as a world in conflict. And what we need to do is to support, I think, that modernizing positive way of being a Muslim, which involves living in the world as it is.” Toward the end of the interview, Rushdie, playfully, and knowingly, says, “I often think that the best way to liberate Iran is just to drop Nintendo consoles from the air. And Big Macs.”
