High Praise For Roger Martin's Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works

Are you just playing—or playing to win? That's what the new book by business speaker Roger Martin and A.G. Lafley will help your company determine. As one of today's best-known business thinkers, Martin has teamed up with Lafley (former Procter & Gamble CEO) to write what Publishers Weekly says is a "standout" guide to business strategy. Titled Playing to Win: How Strategy Really Works, the new book is due on bookshelves this February.

The book explains the nuances of planning, and executing, an effective business strategy. While strategy isn't complex, per se, the authors admit it is hard to do effectively. Building a company strategy requires leaders to make specific choices about the future—which doesn't tend to happen often in most organizations. However, plotting your organization's course is a key component to winning out against your competitors, the authors argue. In the book, they provide five strategic choices that can help you edge ahead of your competition. They also use Proctor & Gamble's miraculous turnaround as a case study for putting these tips into practice. Together, Martin (former strategic adviser for P&G) and Lafley doubled P&G’s sales, quadrupled its profits, and increased its market value by more than $100 billion in just ten years using effective strategizing.

Using their own successes and failures as a case study, the authors have crafted a playbook for winning. And, as Publishers Weekly says: "This collection of insights and captivating examples about strategy is a must-read for leaders at any level in the for-profit or not-for-profit world." With years of experience championing innovation, and teaching others to do the same, Martin is a highly sought after speaker on business and business education.
He is currently the Dean of the Rotman School of Management at the University of Toronto where he teaches his breakthrough method of integrative thinking. He is the author of The Opposable Mind and Fixing The Game, and his opinions are regularly requested in the media and for lectures.
