Obama Calls Kal Penn, Asks Him to Host Part of the Democratic Nat'l Convention

When President Obama calls, you answer. In a new viral video, Obama calls Kal Penn—a renowned actor who has also worked at the White House—and reminds him of his hosting duties at this week’s Democratic National Convention. (Penn will host a web segment called the “Live From Charlotte.”) In a faux-stern voice, Obama asks Penn to take his role as host seriously; Penn, meanwhile, answers the call while watching cartoons on a couch littered with snacks—a sly nod to his junk-food-eating-stoner persona in the Harold and Kumar films. Penn’s segments, including live coverage and commentary, will address key issues raised at the DNC.

In a bid to make this year's convention the most open and accessible in history, President Obama is counting on Penn's notoriety to draw in young and increasingly web-savvy voters. After taking a break from Hollywood in 2009 to work as the Associate Director at the White House Office of Public Engagement until 2011, Penn has spent a lot of his free time encouraging young people to vote.
