Marcelo Suarez-Orozco: The New America Has No Visible Majority

According to a new report issued by the U.S. Census Bureau, there will be no majority groups in society by the year 2043. Diversity speaker Marcelo Suarez-Orozco, an expert on globalization and immigration, recently spoke to FOX News about the implications of this demographic shift. Currently the Dean of the UCLA Graduate School of Education & Information Studies, Suarez-Orozco says that U.S. born children of immigrants—the fastest growing demographic in the population—will feel the impact of this shift most significantly. By the end of this decade, the census report shows, no single race will be in the majority in children under the age of 18.

Because of this, he explains that education must become a priority. We have to ensure that these new Americans are given the opportunity to attend good schools. He also notes that the schools must provide students with the tools and skills necessary to attain the unique jobs of the 21st century. As he explains in his lectures—which he has given across the world, from the United Nations to the Vatican—we must revamp our education system to fit the needs of this growing wave of new citizens. We need to address these changing demographics head on so that we can provide the generations of the future with the skills to succeed in our new interconnected, globalized world.
