Lavin Weekly #2: Coates, Smith, Mimran, Crosley, & Prevette

1. Everyone’s Reading Ta-Nehisi Coates—Even the President!

President Barack Obama shared the six books he’s bringing along on his Martha’s Vineyard beach summer vacation. Included is the book everyone’s talking about: Ta-Nehisi Coates' bestselling memoir Between the World and Me. While certainly not light entertainment, Coates' book should be on every reading list this summer—no matter how or where you’ll be spending it.

2. Patti Smith Transforms Her Award-Winning Memoir into a New TV Series

Legendary artist Patti Smith will be co-writing and producing a limited TV series of her National Book-Award winning memoir Just Kids for Showtime. A television series should shed new light on Smith’s relationship with NYC photographer Robert Mapplethorpe and the 1970s New York art scene. As Smith explains, “The medium of a television limited series offers narrative freedom and a chance to expand upon the themes of the book.” As if that weren’t enough, the sequel to Just Kids, another memoir called M Train, will drop this October.

3. Joe Mimran Sizes up His Upcoming Role on Dragons’ Den

Joe Fresh founder Joe Mimran spoke with Post City Toronto on his upcoming role as dragon on the 10th season of CBC’s Dragons’ Den. Mimran cites his primary motivation for joining the hit series was his passion for “starting and building new businesses from scratch and really trying to make an art with a business.” He also muses on his own personal style, and how it might match up with the other dragons. “The great thing about dragons is they each have their own personalities and they usually march to the beat of their own drummers,” he says. “Having said that, my style is definitely more empathetic. Being an entrepreneur can be a humbling journey no matter how successful, and that is the lens I use.”

4. Amanda Seyfried Blurbs Sloane Crosley’s The Clasp—Kind Of

Actress Amanda Seyfried stars in a playful new book trailer for Sloane Crosley’s upcoming novel The Clasp. While definitely not an informed perspective, so to speak, Seyfried’s endorsements joins some other major literary names—Gary Shteyngart and Michael Chabon, included—who’ve been wowed by Crosley’s spellbinding wit. Part comedy of manners, part treasure hunt, The Clasp is a story of friends struggling to fit together now that their lives haven’t gone as planned, and how to separate the real from the fake—and it hits bookstores this fall.

5. Sarah Prevette’s Entrepreneurial Summer Camp Goes On

Serial entrepreneur Sarah Prevettes Future Design School innovation camp was profiled in the National Post. With campuses and camps in Toronto, London, and Waterloo, Ontario, and with more than 200 children and 20 teachers involved this summer, Prevette will also be launching an FDS after-school program in the fall. As Prevette explains, the motivation behind the FDS was to instill critical thinking skills and a sense that entrepreneurship is always an option for young students. “As a society we need to do a better job at encouraging entrepreneurship, helping kids pursue their curiosity, enabling them to learn through experimentation and empowering them to have a tangible impact on the world around them,” she says. “We want to inspire entrepreneurial philosophy at an early age and give kids confidence in their ability to innovate.”
