Jonah Lehrer: Planning the Perfect City

In this week’s New York Times Magazine, Jonah Lehrer has a big piece on why some cities fail and some succeed, and why — with striking consistency — cities of similar sizes are exactly the same in most meaningful ways. Jonah’s article is actually a profile of Geoffrey West, a physicist who claims to have solved the puzzle of how cities work. There’s a bit of the Jane Jacobs about West. But whereas Jacobs used (for the most part) intuitive observation, West draws on reams of empirical data. He probably also doesn’t wear those giant owl frame eyeglasses! But both are urban visionaries worth exploring or re-exploring as we consider the future of our increasingly urban surroundings.
