The September Issue: Three Lavin Speakers Are on the Cover of The Atlantic

If you look closely at the cover of The Atlantic’s September issue, you’ll notice three bylines—and all of them belong to Lavin keynote speakers! James Fallows’ cover story dissects Mitt Romney’s debating skills. Ta-Nehisi Coates contributes the powerful piece, “Fear of a Black President.” And Hanna Rosin—whose own cover story from 2010, The End of Men, caused much controversy—files a piece on “hookup culture.”

Politics speaker James Fallows pits Barack Obama and Mitt Romney against each other in a head-to-head comparison, in “Mitt Romney, Debater.” Pinpointing each candidate's strengths and weaknesses, the Atlantic’s National Correspondent says that, despite the fact that "Romney is far less effective as a big-speech orator than Barack Obama...debates are and have been his strength."

Ta-Nehisi Coate keeps up with the election theme in, “Fear of a Black President,” where he discusses Obama's avoidance of racially charged issues. Coates writes that “despite his sloganeering for change and progress, Obama is a conservative revolutionary.” He adds: “for most of his term in office, Obama has declined to talk about the ways in which race complicates the American present.”

On a lighter, but equally relevant, note Hanna Rosin discusses “hookup culture”: the sexual revolution wherein dating is replaced by casual “hookups.” As a prominent keynote speaker who often discusses changing roles for women, Rosin writes argues that, “feminist progress right now largely depends on the existence of the hookup culture. And to a surprising degree, it is women—not men—who are perpetuating the culture.” Despite arguments that casual sex is hindering female progress, Rosin says that, in fact, women are excelling and are more successful than ever.
