Countdown by Alan Weisman Wins LA Times Book Prize

We're so pleased to share the news that Countdown: Our Last, Best Hope for a Future on Earth? by Alan Weisman has won the Los Angeles Times Book Prize for Science & Technology. Awarded last Friday night, fellow prize winners included J.K. Rowling (in the Mystery/Thriller category) and John Green (Innovator’s Award). Previous winners include Dave Eggers, Doris Lessing, Jane Jacobs, and Edward O. Wilson.

Alan Weisman is the bestselling author of TIME Best Book The World Without Us, a masterwork of scientific reporting that shows us humanity's true impact on the environment. Countdown, which will be available in paperback on May 6, is a powerful investigation into the chances for humanity's future. How many humans can the planet hold without capsizing? How robust must the Earth's ecosystem be to assure our continued existence? And, how might we actually arrive at a stable, optimum population, and design an economy to allow genuine prosperity without endless growth? Called "a hugely impressive piece of reportage” by the Washington Post, Countdown reveals what may be the fastest, most acceptable, practical, and affordable way of returning our planet and our presence on it to balance.

Watch Weisman on Real Time with Bill Maher in the video embedded above.

In his talks, Weisman challenges each of us to re-imagine our planet—and our place within it. To book Alan Weisman for a speaking engagement, contact The Lavin Agency.
