Early Review of Moneyball the Movie: A Triumph of Storytelling
The film version of Moneyball — based on Michael Lewis’s book about revolutionary Oakland A’s GM Billy Beane — is not due in theatres until this September, but some early reviews are already in. A write-up was recently posted on Hollywood Elsewhere: “I loved it, and I didn’t expect to. It’s a baseball-from-the-business-angle movie, for goodness sake, and to be honest on my way over I was asking myself, ‘why am i even going?’ But this film is a triumph of storytelling, editing and a little bit of star power.” The star power comes courtesy of Brad Pitt, who plays Billy Beane. Under the unorthodox leadership of Beane, the small-market, small-budget A’s have been able to compete with behemoths like the Yankees and the Red Sox by using statistical analysis — instead of gut instinct — to find hidden competitive advantages.
