Mike Rowe Bids Farewell to Dirty Jobs, Looks Forward To The Future [VIDEO]

"We worked hard. And we had a hell of a good time. It was as they say, a very good run," Mike Rowe writes in the Huffington Post. After eight years of "exploding toilets, venomous snakes, misadventures in animal husbandry, and feces from every species," Rowe won't be taking on any new apprenticeships as the host of The Discovery Channel's Dirty Jobs. After eight successful seasons, the show has come to an end. In the article, Rowe extends a humbled thank you (which, as he notes, is perfectly timed to coincide with Thanksgiving) to anyone involved with the show during its run. "Dirty Jobs was never intended to become a comprehensive collection of Americans who comprise the finest work ethic on Planet Earth," Rowe writes. "But thanks to you, it became exactly that. I'm honored to have worked with each and every one of you."

He says that the support of the fans and the laborers that he had the chance to work with impassioned him to tackle wider issues in the employment sector. "Dirty Jobs became weirdly relevant in ways that no one anticipated," Rowe said, "[and] suddenly, I found myself answering questions about jobs and manufacturing, infrastructure and the skills gap." Since then, Rowe has become a dedicated advocate for the virtues of hard work. He has since launched mikeroweWORKS, given speeches on employment and the economy to congress, and written open letters to both Mitt Romney and Barack Obama. While he admits that he will miss his time with Dirty Jobs, he is hopeful about what the future has in store. "Good things are in the works," he said. "Not as dirty perhaps, but exciting nevertheless. I'm looking forward to the future, and feeling grateful for the past."
